Arizona Does Not Participate In Daylight Savings

Foreground

  • "All of Arizona is in the Mountain Time Zone. Since 1968, most of the state—with exceptions noted below—does not observe daylight saving time and remains on Mountain Standard Time (MST) all year." (Time in Arizona)

  • The offset is -7 hours behind (UTC), or Coordinated Universal Time, or can typically displayed as (GMT-7). Where GMT stands for "Greenwhich Mean Time"

  • Daylight savings was originally coordinated to allow farmers more light during the dusk hours so that they could get a longer days work in during the winter months when it's already hard enough to find the motivation to wake up.

    • Since, then the light-bulb has been invented and children are now groggier than ever come the spring solstice when they "spring forward" and lose a precious hour of sleep.

      • Arizona, thank you for realizing how obscene this is in the modern world.

Why is Arizona special?

  • "Because of Arizona's hot climate, DST is largely considered unnecessary. The argument against extending the daylight hours into the evening is that people prefer to do their activities in the cooler evening temperatures. The Navajo Nation, a semi-autonomous Native American territory, follows the United States DST schedule.

    • It lies in northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southeastern Utah and thus maintains the same time throughout tribal lands despite state borders." (Time in Arizona)

Will it Stay This Way Forever?

    • Forever is a long time, maybe. It is important that Arizona and the Native Tribes maintain a respectful relationship; as they have. It is something to note though that while they rely on good communication to establish bounds. The idea of time-zones extends much farther than the local inhabitants. Congress and the Senate have made great strides to accommodate everyone in this scenario. The idea to remove DST (Daylight Savings Time) from the calendar was strewn about,

      • "On March 15, the Senate unanimously passed legislation that would eliminate switching and make daylight saving time permanent. The bipartisan bill, which would take effect next year, must be passed by the House of Representatives and signed by President Biden before it becomes law." (Daylight Saving Time, Chiu)
